root extent
When defining extent hierarchies, than one and only one extent must be the base for all subsets. This extent, which is a super set for all derived extents, is called root extent. Usually, global instances do have one and only one root extent, but they might be stored also in more than one root extent. Root extents define distinct collections and are the owner of the instances stored in the root extent.
